Penis Girth: How to Measure and Understand It

Girth means circumference around the erect shaft. The 2015 systematic review reported a mean erect circumference of 11.66 cm (4.59 inches) from 381 measurements. A 2025 review reported 11.91 cm (4.69 inches) from 5,168 measurements. These are study averages, not a definition of normality or a personal prediction.

What is the average erect penis girth?

The 2015 review by Veale and colleagues reported mean erect circumference of 11.66 cm (4.59 inches), based on 381 erect measurements. A later 2025 systematic review reported 11.91 cm (4.69 inches), based on 5,168 erect measurements. The overall review samples were larger than the samples contributing to these erect measurements.

How to measure circumference

Use a flexible measuring tape around the shaft while fully erect. Keep the tape snug without compressing the tissue, and use the same position each time. Record the method so that comparisons are consistent.

Girth and condom fit

Circumference can help identify a starting point for condom width, but it cannot guarantee fit. Nominal width, material, shape and brand design vary. Check the individual product specifications and follow the manufacturer instructions.

Understand the research

Different reviews include different studies, participant groups and measurement protocols. An average is not a percentile distribution. My Size Report estimates percentiles using its stated reference model and does not derive a new percentile model from the 2025 mean alone.

My Size Report provides a private, calculator-led way to understand measurements against published research. Results are informational and should not be treated as medical advice.
